Sanjaya_dances_paulaFor the American Idol Top Nine performance show, the finalists were mentored by Tony Bennett.  Blake Lewis performed “Mack The Knife.” Randy Jackson said “That was very good way to start off the evening.” Paula Abdul said “Tonight, you personified pizzazz.”  Simon Cowell said “I give you seven out of ten, I’ll give the band eight out of then though.”

Phil Stacey performed “Night & Day.”  Randy Jackson said “I just didn’t feel any real connection.”  Paula Abdul said “The good news is you’re reminiscent of a young Frank Sinatra, I think so, but the constructive criticism is I still need you to just have more joy.”  Simon Cowell said “I think it had all the joy of somebody singing in a funeral parlor.”

Melinda Doolittle performed “I’ve Got Rhythm.”  Randy Jackson said “You come out here every week and you give everyone here a lesson in singing.”  Paula Abdul said “You’re like a master class for everyone else to watch.”  Simon Cowell said “I don’t think we’re ever going to be able to criticize you.  This is a problem.”   When Ryan Seacrest asked why that was a problem, Simon Cowell replied “Because we like being mean to people occasionally.”

Chris Richardson performed “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.”  Randy Jackson said “I think this is one of your best performances of the whole season.”  Paula Abdul said “You made it so hip and so cool.”  Simon Cowell said “I thought that was very good actually, Chris.”

Jordin Sparks performed “On A Clear Day.”  Randy Jackson said “You’re like a pro, and you’re seventeen.”  Paula Abdul said “You really are this magnet of joy.”  Simon Cowell said “I just think you sang a song very well, but it was very old fashioned, very traditional.”

Gina Glocksen performed “Smile.”  Randy Jackson said “That was a very nice, controlled performance for the rocker girl.”  Paula Abdul said “That was a flawless performance, understated, beautiful, and sentimental.”  Simon Cowell said “I can’t rave about the vocals, sorry Gina.”

Sanjaya said “My goal this week is to make America see that I actually can sing.”  Sanjaya Malakar performed “Cheek to Cheek.”  Sanjaya had his hair slicked back and danced with Paula Abdul during his performance.  Randy Jackson said “What I like about you now is you’ve turned into a great entertainer.”  Paula Abdul said “I get why people love you.”  Simon Cowell said “Let’s try a different tactic this week.  Incredible.”

Haley Scarnato performed “Ain’t Misbehavin’.”  Randy Jackson said “What do you think Paula?”  Paula Abdul said “Did I mention green’s a good color for you?”  Simon Cowell said “I think you’ve got great legs.  Actually, I thought I agree with Randy, it was a good style of music for you.  It was a little bit pageanty I thought.”

Lakisha Jones performed “Stormy Weather.”  Randy Jackson said “I loved this, this was the perfect song for you.”  Paula Abdul said “You sound beautiful, it proves that we all Tony Bennett.”  Simon Cowell said “Back on form, Lakisha, that was a sassy, great performance.”

For the American Idol top ten performance show, the theme was songs by No Doubt and songs that inspired Gwen Stefani.  Lakisha Jones performed “Last Dance.”  Randy Jackson said “It’s good to see you make a change and rock it.”  Paula Abdul said “Donna Summers is not an easy artist to start out with, and you did her proud.”  Simon Cowell said “It’s the Lakisha who I loved three or four weeks ago, coming back here, putting your mark back on this competition, and a great vocal.”

Chris Sligh performed “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.”  Randy Jackson said “Rhythm-wise, man, it made it a train wreck for me.”  Paula Abdul said “Vocally, it sat really nice in the tonal part of your voice so that was a good choice, but man you’ve got to hear that beat.”  Simon Cowell said “I thought it was a mess to be honest with you, Chris.”

Gina Glocksen performed “I’ll Stand By You.”  Randy Jackson said “I thought this was one of your best performances ever.”  Paula Abdul said “I love the fact that you’re improving each week and you’re coming into your own as an artist.”  Simon Cowell said “Gina, it wasn’t one of your best performances, it was your best performance.”

Sanjaya Malakar performed “Bath Water.”  Randy Jackson said “Listen, the hairdo is definitely interesting.   I like the kind of Mohawk look.”  Paula Abdul said “To watch it on stage and not go for it, it’s kind of like we’re going ah, come on.“  Simon Cowell said “I presume there was no mirror in your dressing room tonight.”  Sanjaya replied “You’re just jealous that you couldn’t pull it off.”  Simon said “I couldn’t I agree.  Sanjaya, I don’t think it matters anymore what we say, actually.  I genuinely don’t.  I think you are in your own universe and if people like you, good luck.”

Haley Scarnato performed “True Colors.”  Randy Jackson said “It was just kind of alright for me.”  Paula Abdul said “You held like more of an adult contemporary performance to that, and it didn’t stay younger, and I think that you should aim to be more contemporary.”  Simon Cowell said “I think it was sweet but forgettable really.”

Phil Stacey performed “Every Breathe You Take.”  Randy Jackson said “I actually kind of liked that, dog.”  Paula Abdul said “I would just work on building a little more character in the verses, other than that I think it was a real good performance.”  Simon Cowell said “This may surprise you, Phil, but I actually thought that was very good.”

Melinda Doolittle performed “Heaven Knows.”  Randy Jackson said “You actually are living the words, that’s what a real singer does.”  Paula Abdul said “I love when people tell stories when they’re singing, and you do it in spades.”  Simon Cowell said “Vocally, however, as usual you were outstanding, hate the outfit.”

Blake Lewis performed “Love Song.”  Randy Jackson said “I liked it, I wasn’t jumping up and down, but I liked it.”  Paula Abdul said “I think you’re the dark horse.  I think you can sail in, and I would love to see you in the finale.” Simon Cowell said “Definitely, the strongest guy in the competition, Blake, that’s for sure.”

Jordin Sparks performed “Hey Baby.”  Randy Jackson said “You could literally sing anything, you would be a great recording artist, and that was brilliant.”  Paula Abdul said “I love seeing you in this kind of mode.”  Simon Cowell said “I think you are probably the most improved contestant we’ve seen in terms of the last few weeks.”

Chris Richardson performed “Don’t Speak.”  Randy Jackson said “You actually can sing the runs, so I enjoy when you do that man.”  Paula Abdul said “You’re good, Chris, you’re good.”  Simon Cowell said “As Randy said, I quite like the arrangement.  However, I wasn’t crazy about the vocal.”

So who will be going home next?
